Causes for Children's Hair Loss

Children's hair loss is more common than many people think. It has been reported that three to five percent of all visits to the pediatrician are for hair loss related conditions. Typically, children's hair loss is caused by one of the following five conditions:

  • Children's Alopecia Areata

(Hair loss in circular patterns, commonly up to two inches)

  • Children's Tinea Capitis

  • (Caused by a fungal infection of the scalp, eyebrows, or eyelashes with a propensity for attacking hair shafts and follicules)

  • Children's Traction Alopecia

  • (physical damage caused by teasing, fluffing, combing, washing, blow drying, etc.)

  • Children's Trichotillomania

  • (Compulsive hair pulling)

  • Children's Telogen Effluvium

  • (Hair shedding due to high fever, flu, or severe emotional stress)\
